The Most Important Qualities of an Outstanding
                   School Library Media Specialist (SLMS)

As the Association for School Librarians explains the role of the SLMS is
diversified into four roles of teacher, instructional partner, information
specialist, and program administrator. While all four roles are equally
important it is the qualities of organization, attention to detail, adaptability,
and enthusiasm that really get all four jobs done at one time.

Access to materials is crucial to a librarian's success. Organization is the
key to that process.   While the job of a SLMS is dynamic and diverse taking
the SLMS in many directions simultaneously, it is the organization of the daily
procedures and overall program structure being held together at the helm by
the organized SLMS which causes the program to be exemplary.

Detail-oriented SLMS are able to assist students and teachers in being
able to navigate through the world of information literacy. It is the littlest
detail which makes a URL address connect with the website or correct
cataloging tags to assist students in finding information on a certain topic.
The SLMS who pays attention to detail is the one who is able to provide a
quality program for the school community.

Adaptability is arguably one of the most needed facets of the SLMS job.
The adaptable SLMS is able to service the needs of forty students who just
dropped in with their teacher because it was a teachable moment for them to
visit the library media center.  The adaptable SLMS is the one who can easily
learn the latest technology and learn how to incorporate it into the school's
curriculum.

Without enthusiasm even a well-run library program will not service student
need. An approachable and eager SLMS is one that creates a community of
inquiry that the school community wishes to become a part of. Instead of
dreading a trip to the library, the SLMS's enthusiasm is infectious to the
entire learning community and entices them to participate.

Organization and paying attention to detail enables the librarian to be
adaptable and enthusiastic about the high quality program she is able to
offer the learning community.
